Microsoft Confirms Fable Reboot Delayed to 2026

The upcoming Fable reboot from Microsoft and Playground Games has been officially delayed to 2026. Originally planned for a 2025 release, the game’s postponement was confirmed by Craig Duncan, the head of Xbox Game Studios, in a recent episode of the official Xbox podcast.

“We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025, we are actually going to give Fable more time and it’s going to ship in 2026 now,” Duncan explained. “While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait. I have unequivocable confidence in the Playground team.”

Microsoft initially revealed Fable’s return in 2020, exciting fans of the classic fantasy RPG series. Last year, at the Xbox summer showcase, early gameplay footage was presented, highlighting the game’s protagonist, Humphry. In this reimagined Fable, Humphry—a retired hero—is drawn back into battle when a dangerous figure from his past emerges, putting Albion in jeopardy.

As part of the delay announcement, Microsoft also shared additional gameplay footage, providing another brief look at the world of Fable. The game is being developed by Playground Games, a studio widely recognized for its work on the Forza Horizon franchise. Though best known for racing games, Playground Games is using its expertise in crafting stunning environments to bring Albion to life in an unprecedented way.

Craig Duncan emphasized the team’s commitment to quality, saying, “What they’re bringing to the Fable franchise, just think of the visuals of what you expect from Playground Games, plus amazing gameplay, British humor, and Playground’s take… in quite frankly the most beautifully realized version of Albion that you’ve ever seen.”

While the delay may come as a letdown for eager fans, Microsoft and Playground Games appear dedicated to making sure this new iteration of Fable lives up to expectations. With the additional development time, the team has the opportunity to refine gameplay mechanics, expand the world, and ensure that the game stays true to the beloved franchise.
